Safe Surfing On The Internet
Do you know what your children do when they’re online?
Children are especially vulnerable to undesirable content or situations on the internet. The key to promoting your children’s safety online is to educate yourself and your children. There are things you can do to help your children enjoy all the benefits of the internet without falling prey to the risks. The Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office is proud to offer educational programs for children and parents on how to surf the internet safely.

Sexual Assault Prevention
Have you ever been the victim of a sexual assault; such as rape, date rape, inappropriate touching, obscene exposure or verbally assaulted. All are examples of sexual assaults. These are crimes of opportunity. You can eliminate the opportunity; and you can decrease your chances of being a victim by recognizing potentially dangerous situations. This program will give you many tips on how to stay safe from sexual assaults and defend yourself if you must.

Lost but Found Safe and Sound
This program is designed to show children ages 4-12 what to do if they become lost in remote areas such as parks or forests. This program includes a professionally produced video where a 7 year old child tells a story about being separated from her parent while hiking. The video has won many film awards. We also address children getting lost in urban environment i.e. shopping centers, stores, amusement parks.

Eddie Eagle
Gun Safety program for Children. Sponsored by the NRA this program is geared to children ages 4-12. This program removes the curiosity surrounding guns by talking to children openly and honestly about them. It will help children understand the difference between pretend and real by explaining that movies and TV often show guns being used incorrectly. Most important message for children is that if they see a gun- STOP! DON’T TOUCH. LEAVE THE AREA. TELL AN ADULT.

Teen Suicide Prevention
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among adolescent’s aged 15-19 years in the United States. Are you familiar with the warning signs? What would you do to help someone? What local agencies are there to assist someone contemplating suicide. What are some suicide myths and facts? If you don’t know all of the answers to these questions, allow us to help you to become better acquainted with ways to prevent teen suicide.
