Is the National Rifle Association’s response to the American public’s need for a firearm orientation program for beginning shooters or new gun purchasers. It provides a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper operation of a specific model of firearm, whether one owned by the student or one supplied by the instructor. To not only improve retention, but also to make learning fun, these courses reflect the TPI (Total Participant Involvement) philosophy of "learning by doing". The format includes four distinct orientation lessons, each 45 to 60 minutes in length; Introductions to (1) Firearm Safety, Parts and Operations, (2) Ammunition and the Fundamentals of Marksmanship, (3) Firing the first shots from the bench rest position and (4) Cleaning, Storage and Training Opportunities.
